Childrens' Emotional Trauma from Tsunami Disasters

By Josh Adams

The victims of the tsunami not only underwent severe physical trauma from the devastating waters, but they also suffered and still are suffering from emotional injuries. Dr. Michael Wasserman, who is a pediatrician, feels that the children are going through the most severe amounts of trauma. He explains that to the children’s mind, their whole world has been torn away from them because of their strong need for consistency in everyday activities. He says that one of the most important things a parent could do for their child after such devastation, is going back to a normal routine. Indonesian counselors have been sent out to help these children, while trying to maintain ‘normality’. Dr. Wasserman also believes that re-opening schools would be another great step to treating these children’s emotional suffering. The schools wouldn’t have to actually teach if they didn’t want to. The target would be to simply get the kids back into a routine that they are used. Already, school has re-opened in large parts of tsunami-devastated areas.

Unfortunately, the children living in tsunami and other areas devastated by natural disaster are not the only ones who have suffered from emotional trauma. As gruesome images and stories of the tsunami victims have emerged through the mass media, many young children don’t know how to deal with such frightening realities. As Wasserman put it, “A 6-year-old can’t handle something that maybe a 12-year-old could.” Parents in the U.S. and all over the world should be careful about what they expose their children’s minds to. In the end, it all just depends on the child however.
