Tysabri Miracle Drug Withdrawn From Market
In early 2004 a new drug called Tysabri was put out on the market as a cure to multiple sclerosis, a brain disease that can lead to weakness of the muscles, trouble with concentration, slurred speech and even paralysis. The drug was taken off the shelf in early 2005 after researchers found it triggered a very serious disease when combined with another drug. Out of two patients who ended up with the disease, one died. Both public and government opinion say one death is far too many for the sake of research. As disappointing as this episode has been to the company who developed the drug in 2005, the Food and Drug Administration approved an application in 2006 for resumed marketing of Tysabri (aka natalizumab) with a special restricted distribution program. The large amount of research invested into this breakthrough drug was not wasted. Multiple sclerosis is coming closer and closer to meeting a complete cure, but road blocks such as this can be expected. |
